The slip dress is another remnant from the 90s that has made its way back and it’s not going anywhere. It’s sultry…sexy…minimal…and perfectly adaptable. I love the clean lines, lightweight fabric and understated sex appeal of the silhouette. It’s also seriously comfortable, which makes sense since it originated as sleepwear. But what if you don’t necessarily want to show off a lot of skin?

In this case, I layered my dress with a cozy sweater on top and kept everything simple with booties and minimal accessories. Layering a sweater is such an easy to way to turn one of my favorite dresses into a year-round item. You’ve seen me style a t-shirt under a slip dress or a sweater over a slip dress before, and the obsession continues here. I truly feel that the slip dress is the most versatile piece I have in my closet. It’s sexy and sophisticated and can be worn in so many different ways. I’m all about creating as many looks as I can from one item.

three key pieces

To pull off this outfit, you need three key pieces, some of which you may already have in your closet: suede ankle booties, a cozy knit, and a slinky slip dress. For something extra, add a pair of statement earrings. When choosing a sweater for this look, I went with a length that would hit right at my hips. I liked the v-neck of this one but have previously worn an off-the-shoulder silhouette which also worked. I’m planning on wearing this dress with a longer cardigan and booties for another fun variation.

For an evening look, I would wear this dress with a leather jacket and heels. So many possibilities. One thing I love about fashion is that you don’t need to label yourself in just one style category, whether it’s girly, classic, edgy, casual, professional, preppy, etc. You can wear anything and be anyone depending on how you feel that day. Style is a way to expression yourself so you should dress however you feel. Getting dressed should always be fun! This dress serves as a center point and you can layer and accessorize around it, depending on how you feel and what you want to express that day.
