Exactly one week ago, J and I brought Brooklyn home. She’s been such a good puppy and already part of our little family. On Sunday, we drove her home and she was pretty much crying the entire 2 hour ride home. We felt so guilty looking at her sad puppy dog eyes. She was pulled away from her parents and brothers and sisters and understandably homesick. The next few days were difficult as she was adjusting to her new world. Early morning walks (and sometimes middle of the night walks), accidents, whimpering and generally changing everything about our routine made it an interesting week!
We took her to the vet to make sure everything was okay and starting changing things up by day 3. I made the mistake of filling her bowls to the top with food and water, thinking she would feel more at home and loved if we gave her a nice meal. Big mistake! She ate everything in her bowl in about 2 minutes and then vomited part of it, which was followed by an episode of diarrhea. Poor girl! We must have given her 4 baths in the first 3 days. We started feeding her half a cup of food three times a day and walking her about 2 hours after she ate each time along with some extra walks when she looked anxious.
We also got to know her a little better. She hates being alone so if one of us is in the room, she’s content. If we’re both in the room and she’s whining, there’s a 90% chance that she needs to handle her business. One thing that we didn’t necessarily realize at first but understand now is that she’s a baby. Everything is new to her. She loves to be carried and hugged and really just craves basic necessities. As long as we’re paying attention to her and feeding her, she’s a happy puppy.
J has wanted a dog since he was little and pretty much since we got married, it’s been a topic on our minds. Neither one of us grew up with a dog and I wasn’t 100% into it. Now that we have her, i’m so happy we went for it! I’m excited to see her when i’m driving home from work and love going for walks together as a family. We’ve been spending more time outside and we’ve met more of our neighbors and other dogs in the area. It’s so funny but Brooklyn loves running up to strangers and playing with them but she’s extremely scared of other dogs. When she sees a big dog, she hides behind us with her tail between her legs. Little does she know that she’s going to be a big dog herself one day!
It’s pretty amazing watching how she reacts to the world around her. A car passing by, a door opening, or even footsteps peek her curiosity and she starts looking around for where the sound is coming from. Brooklyn is so loving and really enjoys cuddling and curling up on the couch with us. When one of us comes into the room, she gets excited and starts jumping on us. If she’s sleeping and we leave, her head suddenly pops up and she has a confused look on her face, wondering where we’re going. We have a video of her holding a toy football and running from one end of the room to the other and I think i’ve seen it 8 times. Everyone told us we were crazy to get a puppy with a baby on the way but I’m happy to say Brooklyn is a welcome addition to our family and we’re so excited to have her.
A few months ago, I never thought I would be this into having a puppy and I definitely wouldn’t think to write an entire blog post on a dog but things have clearly changed. J and I were outside yesterday eating dinner and we suddenly both realized that we were sitting home on a Saturday night with a baby on the way and a dog lounging next to us. We weren’t out somewhere trying a new restaurant, meeting friends for drinks, or exploring the city like we once would on a typical Saturday night. As much as we still love doing those things, we didn’t feel like we were missing out. We just felt happy. I’m grateful for those times in which we can just stop, reflect on where we are in our lives and enjoy the moment together.
