Philadelphia knows good beer. Independence Beer Garden, one of the newest beer gardens in the city, is a massive new outdoor restaurant in Philadelphia’s historic Old City. Located near the Liberty Bell Center and Independence National Historical Park, the restaurant serves over 40 kinds of regional and domestic craft beers.
Distressed metal and repurposed wood, fire pits, games, and cafeteria-style lunch tables create an intimate environment in a sprawling 20,000 square foot, 360-degree retreat. It’s beer garden season and there’s no more popular summer destination in Philadelphia than a previously vacant lot turned beer sanctuary where you can drink with your friends and enjoy your surroundings.
In a word, Independence Beer Garden is a playground for adults. There are table-sized Jenga stacks set up, just waiting to be knocked down. Bocci games get progressively more embarrassing as the beer takes its effect. The fries disappear in seconds. Watching a highly intense game of Jenga, I found myself laughing and bonding with other beer drinkers while anxiously hoping the tower wouldn’t collapse!
The delicious local food, tasty beer, and music unintentionally all contribute to a sense of community amongst Philadelphians while improving the urban landscape, one converted lot at a time.
