It occurred to me that life has been moving so fast that I haven’t had much time to think about what I’m going to wear. I’ve quickly been pulling something together in the few minutes I have between school drop off and my first meeting. On a typical day, I wear yoga pants, a hoody and baseball cap to drop off my kids at school. When I’m back, I get myself dressed and log in (I mostly work from home). Now that it’s officially spring, I’m excited to add some fresh pieces to my closet that have caught my attention and reflect my personal style (like these shoes that i’ve already purchased).
Clothes bring so much joy to my daily routine. When that element missing, I feel like I’m just rushing from one activity to the next without intent. I’ve really missed that time in the morning to stand by myself in my closet and pick out what I’m wearing that day. It’s like a puzzle – picking the right combination of clothes and accessories that fit together in a way that I want to show up that day.
This week, I gave myself a moment to think about what I wanted to wear for a dinner with colleagues and went with this belted shirt dress. It felt really good to take my time and pick something with intention, rather than rushing from one task to another. The dress embodied the vibe I was going for – professional, confident, chic. That was the version of myself I wanted to portray that evening. Creating a wardrobe that reflects and elevates your personal style takes years of trial and error. Having that sense of what to reach for that feels true to you and reflects your particular mood is more complicated than it seems.
All this to say, I truly love how I felt in that dress. As I walked toward the restaurant, a woman walked toward me in the opposite direction. She turned in my direction and said, “You look gorgeous. That dress is stunning on you.” Sometimes it’s the dress but more often, it’s the way you wear the dress – with confidence and a bit of a bounce in your step. Also, is there a better compliment than from another woman? I smiled and said thank you, thinking to myself – I need to do this more often for other women.
