One of my favorite fashion activities is trend forecasting. I’m sharing New York Fashion Week (NYFW) trends that caught my attention because there is really no greater reward then being an early adopter of a trend that is about to explode. Why is that, you may be wondering? So you can get first picks on the best pieces available at reasonable prices before the masses catch on and everything skyrockets. And for personal satisfaction, of course.

February is Fashion Month and although we’re only half-way through, there are several trends that are already emerging, like monochromatic outfits, plaid suits, mixed prints, and asymmetrical necklines. Some of my favorite looks were by Sally LaPointe, Oscar de la Renta, and Proenza Schouler. They were all gorgeous and I encourage you to click on the links throughout this post to check it all out for yourself.

Although these trends are for Fall/Winter of 2019, I’m already using them as inspiration for some of my outfits, like the one featured here. Monochrome

While browsing through NY Fashion Week trends for Fall 2019, my attention immediately turned to the monochromatic looks making an appearance on the runway. This year, I was most drawn to the looks from Cushnie, especially these burgundy outfits. Whether it’s a suit, a dress, or pants with a sweater, each look looks expertly crafted and stylish. There’s something about a single color palette that makes me stop and stare. It’s so simple but somehow still captivating. The key to keeping the look interesting is mixing in different shades, textures and silhouettes to create an ensemble made up entirely of one color. For this look, I combined a thick, textured sweater with a light pleated skirt and suede pumps, all in burgundy.

There’s no one that makes the monochrome look more dramatic than Alice and Olivia. This beige look by Proenza Schouler is so chic. I love these monochromatic looks from Tom Ford, Brandon Maxwell, and Cinq à Sept.

Asymmetrical off-the-shoulder neckline

From Carolina Herrera’s bold asymmetrical neckline to Cushnie’s cutout satin gown, I love an asymmetrical neckline. The soft draping gives that effortless but fierce vibe that looks incredible both on and off the runway. This look by Hellessy is one of my favorite outfits.

Turtlenecks

I haven’t always been a fan of turtlenecks but recently I have loved the look of a beige or camel turtle neck layered under long coats. I can definitely see myself wearing the turtleneck shown here with loose-fitting trousers and a black coat.

Suits

Power suits have been showing up in full force and they’re not the boring corporate America version we’re used to. I’ve seen some beautiful prints (especially plaid) and textures on the runways, particularly from designers like Jonathan Simkhai, ADEAM, TIBI, and Brock Collection. I really like the addition of a belt to cinch the waist and create that hourglass silhouette, as shown here. I’m really excited to wear my Happily Grey x Aqua velvet black suit I’ve been saving for just the right occasion.

Purple

I wore a lavender Bat-Mitzvah dress so the twelve-year old me would have been obsessed with the fact that purple is trending. Some of my favorite shades of purple pieces were by Christian Siriano and Sally LaPointe. I’m also loving this Christian Siriano futuristic ballerina look. Lastly, have you seen this silver chain ponytail? I need to somehow recreate this.

Mixed prints

I’ve been noticing a lot of mixed prints that are back in style, especially when it comes to animal prints like leopard and snake. Truthfully, I don’t normally mix prints together and tend to stick to neutral tones but I’m intrigued. I really like the approach that Kate Spade and Alice and Olivia took with 70s-inspired florals. These looks by Jonathan Cohen and Proenza Schouler are perfection.

I’m really excited to wear this zebra-printed midi dress from Topshop ($60!) with a pair of black ankle booties. I’m still obsessed with this leopard-print midi skirt that I previously posted on the blog. I’ve been wearing it all Summer, Fall and Winter long. I included some mixed print options below, including some of my favorites from the patchwork maximalist variety.

-Fashion trends I can’t get behind-

Colorful winter coats -I love a stylish winter coat but I can’t justify spending $200 plus for a hot pink or purple version. I would sit this one out.

Psychedelic tie-dye – This will always be a hard no for me. I don’t even think I liked this trend in the fourth grade, the first time in my life the tie-dye look started trending.

Neon – I could potentially see myself wearing a neon pink top with a camel coat but it’s not my favorite trend of the season.

Dad sneakers – Dad sneakers made an appearance in 2018 and it looks like they aren’t going anywhere. I’m going to have to skip this one out and stick to my checkered Vans.
