On any given weekday, I have less than ten minutes to get myself ready in the morning before my littlest baby (he’s one now!) is ready to start his day. That includes brushing my teeth, applying SPF on my face and maybe putting on some mascara. After almost a year of wearing yoga pants or sweatpants, I just can’t do the lounge look anymore. I’ve been trying to put together an outfit everyday, even if I have no where to go. For me personally, it’s something I need to feel good. It can be dressy or casual but it can’t be sweatpants (anymore). Lately, i’ve been wearing knit midi dresses because they’re essentially a blank canvas.

My go-to look at home is a knit tank dress (bra not required), being BAREFOOT (must be able to chase after kids quickly without the risk of slipping and hurt myself) and having my hair in a high ponytail. It’s such an easy way to look like a chic mama. If I’m leaving the house, I step it up with layers and accessories. See below for some styling ideas.

When I worked in an office, a knit knee-length dress was my go-to outfit, especially during transitional weather. In the photos above, I’m wearing one of my favorite work outfits a camel suede trench coat with a pair of mules. This must be my most worn dress. It’s by a brand called Privacy Please and has lasted through at least through three pregnancies and postpartum periods in my life. An alternative is adding a leather jacket with black combat boots. Think Catherine Banning (i.e. the lovely Rene Russo) in the Thomas Crown Affair when she shows up at Crown’s mansion to search the premises with a faulty warrant. 🙂

A few ways you can style a knit knee-length dress

Opt for a tank dress in the Spring/Summer and a long-sleeve version in the Fall/Winter. I just ordered this one for myself.

  • Layered with a leather or denim jacket and barely-there sandals – a great Spring look
  • Add a long cardigan and a pair of Keds
  • Layered with a camel trench coat and sling-back heels
  • For colder days: A knit dress with knee-length boots, a long cardigan and accent with accessories

What do you think? What clothes do you reach for most often when working at home?

If you’re browsing on your own, I used the search terms “knit”, “ribbed” and “sweater dress.”
